What is Bladder Botox Therapy?

Bladder Botox therapy is a medical procedure that involves the injection of botulinum toxin into the bladder muscle to treat conditions such as overactive bladder (OAB) and urinary incontinence. The therapy is a minimally invasive procedure and can be performed in clinic without the need for general anaesthesia.

What Conditions Can it Treat?

Bladder Botox therapy is primarily used to treat two main conditions:

1. Overactive Bladder (OAB): OAB is a condition where the bladder muscles contract involuntarily, causing a sudden urge to urinate.
2. Urinary Incontinence: Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine, which can be caused by weakened pelvic floor muscles or an overactive bladder. Specifically, it can be used in cases of urge incontinence, where involuntary bladder contractions cause leakage.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox works by blocking the release of a chemical called acetylcholine, which is responsible for muscle contractions. When it is injected into the bladder muscle, it blocks the release of acetylcholine, causing the muscle to relax. This relaxation helps to reduce the symptoms of OAB and urinary incontinence.

Are there any risks?

The main risks of the procedure are developing a urine infection and being unable to completely empty the bladder (urinary retention). The risk of urine infection is around 15% and antibiotics are given prior to the start of the procedure to reduce the risk of infection. The risk of urinary retention can be up to 20% but depends on a variety of factors. Patients are taught how to insert a catheter in case they develop urinary retention.

What happens during the procedure?

Our specialists will insert a cystoscope, which is a small tube with a camera on the end, into the urethra and through to the bladder with local anaesthesia. Once the cystoscope is in place, the Botox is injected directly into the bladder muscle through a small needle. The procedure takes about 15 minutes and the effects last 6 to 9 months.
